Gotham City Impostors is a First Person Shooter that takes place in the streets of Batman’s own Gotham City. The Jokerz Gang are seeking to cause some mayhem and the opposing gang The Bats are there to try to stop them. Since there are no fancy gadgets to allow you to put down your opponent without killing them the Bats have to make do with the next best thing which are guns, explosives and other dangerous weapons. An interesting bit of info I found is that the game is inspired by issues 867 to 870 of Detective Comics.
If there is one thing there are plenty of in gaming It’s First Person Shooters. Admittedly I was feeling a little burned out on them. But Gotham City Impostors had that little extra bit that kept me coming back. The quirkiness of Team Fortress with the gameplay of Call of Duty. The items used to help you take out your enemy range from guns to explosive presents you plant on the ground to cause damage. Goggles to help you see enemy locations and chest plates to assist with damage absorption. Then there are the different kinds of bodies the characters you choose have. You can be a giant muscle bound guy who can take a lot of hits but easy to hit to a scrawny guy/girl who are harder to hit but have less health. Body types also affect your weapon of choice. Smaller bodies can’t carry heavy weapons as easily as a big guy can.
As you level up you will be able to get access to custom slots where you can customize what body type, voice, make up, cape, cowl, weapon, etc… you want to use. As you continue to level up you can get costume coins and unlock other items to make your build more to your liking. If you are feeling particularly impatient you can purchase what you want with real currency. But with enough patience and gameplay you should be able to unlock plenty.
The game is not terribly complicated and comes with a few game modes for you to play with. While not the most polished game of its type it is definitely fun and once you get used to the weapons and gadgets you may find yourself having a blast. There are little things that as of this writing need improvement such as matchmaking and not being able to mute other players for starters. But updates to correct some of these things are on the way along with other freebies such as new weapons.
For the price of $15(1200 Microsoft Points in my case) the game can be yours. If you are looking for the next big thing in First Person Shooters then this isn’t the game for you, but GCI brings a lot to the table as far as fun gameplay, weird weapons, oddball characters and lots of moments that may have you chuckling to yourself despite getting shot down by your opponent. If you have a friend with the game ask if you can give it a go to see if it’s worth your time and money. Gotham City Impostors is available on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.
